Our History

Dixieland Grammar School opened for students in 1924. The inscription “Dixieland Grammar School” remains above the main building today as a reminder of the rich heritage of the school. The building was constructed in six months at a cost of $67,500.00. The land the school was built on was a 330 square foot parcel owned by W.L. Thompson. Mr. Thompson sold the land to the Polk County School Board for $12,500.00. After the building was completed pupils transferred from Lake Morton Elementary. The community welcomed the new school, which was at that time built on the edge of town. Dixieland remains a neighborhood school but is now in the middle of a historical residential area.

Dixieland Elementary School was recognized by the East Coast Technical Assistance Center (ECTAC) as a 2013 Exceeding Expectations Award School. Dixieland was identified as a Title I school that is exceeding expectations by showing significant progress in improving student achievement. We were selected from across Florida based on a combination of criteria consisting of 2013 FCAT scores and a site visit that included classroom observations and interviews. As a result of this award, Dixieland Elementary School presented its successful strategies at ECTAC’s Exceeding Expectations Conference in May 2014 in Tampa. Dixieland was one of seventeen schools from across the state that received their award at a banquet during the conference. ECTAC provides technical assistance services in the development and implementation of Title I programs to thirty-six school districts in Florida.
